Pop Bottle Balloon Challenge

We are a few labs into our Air and Aerodynamics’ unit; the students are picking up on a key concepts quite well.  Both participants and spectators enjoyed our science balloon challenge that we did recently.  There were five students selected to try and blow a balloon up inside of a 2L pop bottle (2 boys and 3 girls).  Despite Logan, Kenyon, Gabriele and Maya’s best effort, they could not get their balloon to expand inside the bottle.  Yet, they were puzzled as to why Keely was able to blow up her balloon so much inside of her bottle.  Little did they know that Mr. Rankin had “doctored” her bottle by placing eight tiny holes at the bottom.  The students learned that air takes up space and can be very powerful.  They learned balloons cannot be blown up inside of a pop bottle (unless it has holes for the air to escape) because there is air already inside the bottle and thus no room for anything else. Enjoy our short video clip…feel free to leave a comment.
